Last year, collapsing stages at Bel- gium’s Pukkelpop festival, Ottawa’s Bluesfest and the Indiana State Fair resulted in multiple deaths and dozens of injuries. Falcon Productions founder Joe DeJessa thinks the incidents were a result of poor planning: “I believe it could have been avoided with an emergency plan, better stage companies and equipment.” Promoters, bands and agents’ requests that structural members be removed to improve sightlines introduce safety issues. His company hires structural engineers who calculate wind loads for trussing systems, monitor weather patterns and account for the weight of personnel and equipment on stage. On land, rods hammered into the ground secure the stage. As the festival climbs aboard cruise ships, water barrels or sand bags weigh units down. DeJessa maintains that, “Our end objective is to produce a show, and our primary objective is to do it safely.”

Falcon Productions made Rock & Roll history by producing the Rock Legends Cruise aboard Royal Caribbean’s Liberty of the Seas in December 2011. ZZ Top headlined an all-star lineup of 20 rock bands performing 58 shows in four days. Also rocking the waves were George Thorogood, John Kay & Steppenwolf, Marshall Tucker Band, Dickey Betts, Foghat, Molly Hatchet, Johnny Winter, Edgar Winter, Outlaws, Artimus Pyle, Blackfoot, Pat Travers, Devon Allman’s Honeytribe, SwampDaWamp, Chris Hicks Band, Preacher Stone, Ryan Balthrop, Whiskey Myers, Crossfyre.
